Last month was the most successful September on record for UK new car registrations according to new figures released this week.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) there were 462,517 new cars registered last month as buyers rushed to snap up the latest 65-plate motors. It was the 43rd consecutive growth in the UK new car market, and takes the total number of new cars registered this year to over two million.
Sales were up in the private, fleet, and business sectors, and across all fuel types. Alternatively-fuelled vehicles continued to be the biggest growth area, up by 21.7%. "September is traditionally one of the year’s biggest months for new car registrations, and last month set an autumn record”, said SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes.
“With plenty of attractive, affordable deals available on the new 65-plate, Britain’s car buyers – whether private, fleet or business consumers – were busier than ever. The market reached pre-recession levels some time ago, and we anticipate some levelling off in the coming months”.
