The UK car market enjoyed a strong start to 2013, with new car registrations up 11.5 per cent over the same figures from January last year.

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) revealed a total of 143,643 cars left dealer forecourts last month, marking an eleventh successive month of growth. The growth was boosted in particular by a 15.9 per cent rise in private registrations.

Mike Baunton, interim chief executive of the SMMT, was positive about the future of the British car market, saying: "Building on a strong performance in 2012, SMMT has increased its market forecast -- we anticipate a modest rise over the year, followed by further growth in 2014."

Last month's biggest seller was the Ford Fiesta, with 7,906 registrations, followed by the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra with 5,794 and 5,462 registrations, respectively.
