UK car manufacturing is going from strength to strength after new figures showed the sector has enjoyed its best half-yearly output since 2008.
Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders revealed 793,642 new cars had rolled off UK production lines by the end of June, up by 0.3% on the same period last year.
June saw UK output grow by 5.4% per cent compared to the same month in 2013, with 143,759 built during the month, while production for the export market was up by 9%.
Production levels in the UK have grown by over 50% since 2009, and with a number of new UK-built models coming online during the coming months all the indications are the sector will enjoy continued growth.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “Today’s figures are testament to the ever-increasing demand for the diverse, high-quality range of cars we make in the UK. The sector is ahead of the game on productivity, with investment in efficient, high-tech manufacturing processes and a highly skilled workforce resulting in huge gains over the past decade. This success has been built on significant industry investment and has also relied on a positive relationship with government, essential if the industry is to maintain its international competitiveness.”
