A road safety group has issued a half-term plea for motorists to check their tyres before embarking on their day trips out.
The school holiday comes in what is traditionally the wettest month of the year, and TyreSafe has issued a reminder that tyre checks are more important than ever as a result.
With the average ‘footprint’ of a car tyre being only around the size of an adult’s palm, it is essential to check that they are in optimal condition. Many drivers know where to find the recommended tyre pressure for their vehicle, commonly found in the vehicles handbook or on a plaque inside the door shut or fuel filler flap, but the TyreSafe say far too many are complacent when it comes to checking that their tyres adhere to these figures. Incorrect tyre pressure not only increases wear and impacts on fuel efficiency, it can also increase the risk of a sudden tyre deflation.
Tread depth is also vitally important in cold and wet conditions, and TyreSafe suggests a simple test to check your tyres meet the legal requirement – insert a 20p piece into the tread and if the outer band is visible the tyre may well be below the 1.6mm minimum. Repeat the test across the width of the tyres, and in at least two places around the circumference. While doing so keep an eye out for lumps, cracks, and embedded objects.
“Drivers need to remember that brakes, steering and all advanced safety systems designed to help avoid accidents depend on the vehicle having a sure footing on the road – in other words, their tyres need to be in good condition,” said Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe. “As we’re now facing an increasing number of cold and wet days, to stay safe we need to be even more attentive to tyre maintenance. Air pressure, condition and tread depth must be checked regularly, especially if you’re planning a break using a car laden with your most prized possessions – your family.”
TyreSafe, which runs its annual Tyre Safety Month throughout October, recommends performing checks at least once a month and before long journeys.
