The Sunderland-built Nissan Qashqai has passed a manufacturing milestone after the two millionth example rolled off the production line.
Reaching the landmark just eight years after going into production is a record for a UK-built car, which is also designed and engineered in this country and saw the introduction of the latest generation model earlier this year. Development of the Qashqai took place at Nissan’s European Design Centre in Paddington, and it’s European Technical Centre in Bedfordshire.
The two millionth Nissan Qashai is destined for a UK customer, and is an example of the new n-tec specification model introduced last month and features Forward Emergency Braking, Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Warning, and High Beam Assist.
The Japanese manufacturer has invested £534 million in the design, development, and production of the Qashqai, and says the model supports over 11,000 UK jobs. The Qashqai is built alongside the al-electric LEAF on Line 1 at Nissan’s Sunderland plant, and to meet customer demand the line has been on round-the-clock, three-shift production for the past four years. A new car rolls off the line every 62 seconds, equivalent to 58 per hour, and 85% of the two million Qashqais produced at the North East facility have been for the export market.
Nissan Europe’s Chairman Paul Willcox said: “The Qashqai is helping Nissan to go from strength to strength in Europe. Two million customers can’t be wrong. This is further evidence of their trust in our brand. Thank you to all of our loyal customers and I congratulate all my colleagues in Sunderland for reaching this latest milestone.”
