Following impressive sales figures on its domestic launch late last year, planned production levels for the Toyota Mirai fuel cell car have been increased to meet future demand when the model is rolled out globally during 2015.

Toyota released the Mirai on the Japanese market in mid-December, and a positive response from the car buying public saw 1,500 orders come in during the first month of sale. With the hydrogen-powered saloon due to be released in the UK and other selected markets this year, the manufacturer has moved quickly to bump up its production plans to meet demand.

With the Mirai due to launch in the UK, the USA, and selected continental markets before the end of this year, Toyota has confirmed its production levels will be increased from 700 units this year, to around 2,000 in 2016, and then around 3,000 units the following year.

The Japanese carmaker has selected the markets in which to introduce the Mirai based on a number of factors, including hydrogen infrastructure development, energy policies, car purchasing subsidies, consumer demand, and environmental regulations.

Full UK pricing and specification for the Toyota Mirai will be confirmed closer to the launch date later this year.
