A third of UK motorists don't enjoy driving anymore, a new poll from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has found.

The main reason given by the respondents for not enjoying driving was the cost of fuel, with 51 per cent of those surveyed citing it as a reason. 41 per cent claimed they no longer enjoyed driving due to congestion, 28 per cent said they were simply no longer excited by driving, while 25.9 per cent cited a lack of leisure time as their main reason.

However, 39 per cent of motorists claimed they still consider driving and riding for fun as their hobby, with a third of those questioned admitting to still going for a spin for fun.

It also seems that other road users are to blame, with more than 60 per cent of drivers claiming it’s the behaviour of other motorists which makes them feel nervous. Bad weather conditions and driving near to lorries were also listed as reasons.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: "With congestion and fuel prices it’s easy to understand why many people think driving is a chore. But the UK still has some of the most beautiful roads in the world and if you have the right skills and confidence in your ability driving can be as enjoyable as ever."
