BMW have revealed their first plug-in hybrid production car from the BMW core brand, based on the already popular X5.
A combination of combustion engine power and electricity will provide the new X5 with 313bhp and deliver a huge improvement in efficiency. The German firm have brought across the technology and experience gained in the development of their ‘i’ brand.
A four cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor will provide power through an 8 speed Steptronic transmission and the battery pack can be charged from any mains electricity point at home or from one of the public charging stations which are becoming more numerous by the day.
BMW say that day to day journeys can be completed with zero exhaust emissions, provided they are reasonably short in distance. They also say that economy of 94.2mpg can be achieved on those short urban journeys.
All optional extras available on the standard X5 are available on the new plug-in hybrid version; these include Adaptive Suspension Package, Active Steering, the Multifunctional Instrument Display, comfort seats in the rear and the ski/snowboard bag.
The new model will be known in full as the BMW X5 xDrive 40e and will be available this Autumn.
