A 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spider became the most expensive Ferrari ever sold at auction when it sold at the weekend for $27,500,000 (£17,571,895).
The car was sold by the family of businessman and philanthropist Eddie Smith who died in 2007. Mr Smith bought the Ferrari new in 1967 for £5,000.
One of only 10 cars of its kind ever made, the Ferrari was expected to fetch £10million went it went under the hammer at RM Auctions in Monterey, California, on Saturday. However, in the event the car ended up selling for more than £6million more than expected, making it the most expensive road-going car ever sold at auction and second most expensive car ever to go under the hammer after a Mercedes W196 racing car driven by Juan Manual Fangio.
The Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spyder was only ever available from one American dealer, Luigi Chinetti. He commissioned Sergio Scaglietti and Enzo Ferrari to build 25 Spyder versions of the 275GTB/4, each of which would be named after his North American Racing Team. Only 10 examples ended up being built, for which Chinetti paid $8,000 each.
Famous owners included Steve McQueen, who insisted that one be used in the 1968 film The Thomas Crown Affair.
But despite its astronomical price tag, the 275 is not the most expensive car ever sold. That accolade goes to a Ferrari 250 GTO, which changed hands privately last year for a rumoured $35m (£22.7m).
All of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to charity.
