Tesla is planning to introduce autonomous cars by 2016, according to company chief executive Elon Musk.
In an interview for the Financial Times, Musk said that Tesla should be able to make 90 per cent of driven miles autonomous "within three years;" however, he was sceptical about the possibility of fully-autonomous cars being developed in the near future.
"My opinion is it’s a bridge too far to go to fully autonomous cars," he told the FT. "It's incredibly hard to get the last few per cent."
The company is even advertising a new job for an engineer to help develop the project on its website, with a position described as being "responsible for developing vehicle-level decision-making and lateral and longitudinal control strategies for Tesla's effort to pioneer fully automated driving."
Of course, Tesla is not the only company with its fingers in the autonomous driving pie. Both Nissan and Volvo, amongst others, are working on similar technology. Recent law changes in California have even allowed Google to test its own self-driving car on the public roads.
