One of the UK’s leading commercial vehicle suppliers has voiced fears that the abolition of the driving licence paper counterpart could have serious repercussions for its customers.
Mercedes-Benz Vans UK spoke out after the changes, which came into effect this week, were met with confusion and computer glitches for drivers and business. Under the new system the paper counterpart has been replaced by an online service which keeps record of information such as penalty points and driving entitlements, with the onus put on the driver to make their information available. A check code can be obtained via the driving licence section of the Gov.uk website and shared with those who need to see the details, such as employers. However, on the day the new system came into force, drivers and businesses experienced an online system which was not working properly, leaving them unable to access the information.
“These changes represent another upheaval for the motorist, and my fear is that it will be the small business owners that are once again hit hardest,” said Mercedes-Benz Vans Managing Director, Steve Bridge.
“Drivers need to remember that they must get their checking code or printable summary in advance of being asked the information. If you run a business, this is the responsibility of your driver to sort, but remember you have final responsibility if you put a driver in a company vehicle and they do not have the correct licence.”
