SEAT has revealed its new Leon Cupra 280, the most powerful series production car ever to come from the Spanish firm.

Pitched to rival the likes of the Golf GTI, the Leon Cupra 280 sits at the top of a five-model family of hot Leon Cupra models. Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and both five-door and three-door SC models will be available.

The Leon Cupra will be available in two states of tune. The range-topping 280 produces 276bhp (280 PS), while a detuned 261bhp model will also be available.

While the less powerful car comes with a six-speed manual gearbox only, the Cupra 280 is available with a choice of manual and DSG gearboxes. With the DSG unit fitted, the Cupra 280 will get from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds, while the manual car takes an extra tenth of a second. All models across the range are electronically limited to 155mph.

Despite the power, the Leon Cupra remains front-wheel drive, and to prevent as unholy mishmash of unruly handling traits, SEAT has given the car a mechanical front axle differential lock which is claimed to eliminate torque steer. A variable ratio steering rack is also included.

The new Leon SC weighs 55kg less than its predecessor and, aided by start-stop technology, the new car will manage 44.1mpg and 149g/km of CO2 in manual form and 42.2mpg and 155g/km with the DSG gearbox.

Like the rest of the Leon range, the Cupra looks focussed and aggressive. Unique 19-inch alloy wheels are included as standard alongside larger air intakes, full-LED headlamps and twin oval exhausts.

On the inside, the Cupra's sports seats are finished in dark grey alcantara with white stitching, while black leather upholstery is available as an option. The pedals and sills are finished in aluminium.

Prices for the new car start at £25,690 for the entry-level 261bhp model, rising to £28,525 for the five-door Cupra 280 with the DSG gearbox.
