The clocks went back an hour over the weekend leading to darker nights, and also leading to a road safety charity to campaign against the move which it says will increase the number of road casualties.
Brake have called for the clocks to be left forward by an hour all year round, estimating it would prevent 80 deaths and 100 serious injuries to vulnerable groups such as pedestrians and cyclists. The charity is part of the Lighter Later campaign, which claims the change would cut down on the 559 deaths and 8,464 serious injuries to walkers and cyclists which occurred last year, and which Brake says increased significantly on dark winter evenings.
Philip Goose, Senior Community Engagement Officer at Brake, said: “As the clocks go back and afternoons get darker, people on foot and bike are more at risk. The government can take a massive and easy step towards making the winter months safer for those on foot and bike by changing the clocks back for good. Drivers can also be responsible and make a huge difference by slowing down, and going 20 or below in towns and villages.”
