A leading road safety organisation has called for urgent action after new data revealed that almost 18,000 pedestrians were injured in road traffic accidents in the past year.
The figure was revealed after a Freedom of Information request was submitted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).Almost a quarter of all accidents involving pedestrian casualties were attributed by the Police as being caused by a combination of pedestrians failing to look properly, or pedestrians being careless, reckless or in a hurry, making these the major causes of such accidents.
The IAM is now calling for road safety education to be made part of the national curriculum, manufacturers to make pedestrian safety a bigger factor in vehicle design, and for UK roads to be made safer by implementing a programme of long-term engineering projects.
"There is no need to blame any party when it comes to how to reduce the numbers of people killed and injured on our roads - all road users need to look out for each other and ensure we minimise the impact of our own and others unpredictable behaviour", said IAM Chief Executive Sarah Sillars.
