The Saab 9-3 has gone back into production at the firm's Trollhattan plant in Sweden for the first time since the company filed for bankruptcy in 2011.
National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), which now owns Saab has announced that production of a petrol-powered 9-3 has begun, with an electric version reportedly on the cards for future release.
The revival of the 9-3 began back in September when NEVS produced two prototypes of the 9-3 saloon as a way of recalibrating and debugging the production lines ahead of the finished car going into production.
Despite the gap in production, the new 9-3 is largely identical to the model which was built by Saab before its bankruptcy.
"It's very similar, you can't change or develop very much in a year," NEVS spokesman Mikael Oestlund told the AFP news agency.
"Our focus has been to get the co-operation up and running with 400 suppliers and ensure the facilities were working."
Although the 9-3 will initially be built in fairly limited numbers, NEVS is looking to increase production over time.
