The Rolls-Royce engineering group will need to cut 2,600 jobs over the next 18 months.

It is thought that most job losses will come in 2015 and the UK stands to be hit hard seeing as 24,000 of the total 55,000 Rolls-Royce employees are based here. Most posts will be removed from the aerospace division and Bristol and Derby look set to be the most affected with a huge 800-1200 job losses according to Unite the union.

Unite's national officer Ian Waddell said: "Rolls-Royce is in danger of making decisions in the short term that it will later regret. This is a bitter blow to a proud workforce and we will be doing everything we can to fight for jobs and skills."

Rolls-Royce has been under financial pressure since announcing losses in February and October; they are expected to look closely at the areas of engineering which have been working on the Trent engines used by many large airlines. Now that the engine is in production, the staff that developed them could be under threat.

A statement from the Department for Business said: "We have consistently supported Rolls-Royce in the UK and will continue to work with them and local partners to support those affected - for example the Talent Retention Solution matches engineering talent with new job opportunities."
