A new direct injection turbocharged petrol engine has been unveiled, to debut in the Renault Scenic and Grand Scenic models next year.
The engine has been a collaborative effort, developed by the Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Daimler to offer improved torque delivery at both low and high revs, as well as improved fuel economy and emissions. The improvements see a fall of 7g/km of CO2 for Scenic models, and 11g/km for Grand Scenic.
Called the Energy TCe engine, the new power plant will be available in 160, 140, and 115bhp versions, and with both manual and EDC dual-clutch automatic transmissions. Amongst the innovations that have led to the improvements are Bore Spray Coating, a cylinder coating technology first seen on the Nissan GT-R engine, which improves reduces friction and optimises heat transfer. The pressure of the direct fuel injection has been also been raised by 250 bar, and the combustion chamber has been design specifically to optimise the fuel/air mix. Dual Variable Timing Camshaft technology controls the intake and exhaust valves according to engine loads, resulting in more torque at low revs and more torque available linearly at high revs.
Already available to order in mainland Europe, Renault Scenic and Grand Scenic models with the new engine will go on UK sale early in the new year, with prices to be confirmed.
