Porsche has announced that its new Macan SUV will be offered with a four-cylinder petrol engine by the end of next year.
Various sources have reported that Porsche has confirmed the fitment of a new, smaller engine to the forthcoming Macan, making the new SUV the first Porsche to come with a four-pot power plant since the 968 was put out to pasture in 1995.
Both petrol and diesel four-cylinder engines are reputedly on the cards; however, Porsche has yet to reveal the exact specifications of the new engines. Autocar magazine thinks that the engines will be a 2.0-litre turbo petrol with 280bhp and a 2.0-litre turbodiesel while What Car? believes that the Macan will take the 2.0-litre engines currently found in the Golf GTI and the GTD.
The new engines will join the existing V6 models in the Macan lineup. Porsche currently expects to produce around 50,000 examples a year at its Leipzig factory; however, demand is expected to be high and it's likely Porsche will ramp up the production numbers when the four-cylinder models go on sale.
