Polestar has unveiled its first car as a standalone brand.
The Polestar 1 will go into production in mid-2019 as Volvo’s former performance car division goes it alone as a performance electric brand. A new purpose-built production facility in China is under construction ready for the 600bhp Polestar 1, a two-door, 2+2 seat grand tourer coupe with a hybrid electric drivetrain.
It will have a fully-electric range of over 90 miles before needing to call on internal combustion, and is based on Volvo’s Scalable Platform Architcture but with the addition of all-new technology such as Öhlins Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension, a weight-saving carbon fibre body, and double electric rear axle for torque vectoring.
The Polestar 1 will also form part of a new scheme which the manufacturer says will move away from the traditional model of vehicle ownership. It will be available for order exclusively online on a two or three year zero-deposit monthly subscription basis, an all inclusive package to include pick-up and delivery servicing and the option to rent other models in the Volvo and Polestar range. Phone-As-Key technology will allow the owner to share a virtual key with a third party, and also provide access to other on-demand features.
Plans for two further Polestar models were also announced. The mid-sized Polestar 2 will follow in late 2019 as a rival to the Tesla Model 3, while the Polestar 3 will be a larger SUV-style vehicle. Both will feature a fully electric powertrain.
Orders for the Polestar 1 can be taken now using the Polestar app.
