Drivers who occasionally break the speed limit may be shocked to learn just how much their actions increase their chances of being involved in an accident.
A leading ‘black box’ provider has studied 3 billion miles of driving data, finding that speeding for just 10 to 20 per cent of a journey increases the likelihood of being involved in a smash fourfold.
Insure the Box Limited, pioneers of telematics technology, found that drivers who spend a tenth of their driving time over the speed limit saw their risk of an accident jump by 42%, a figure which rose to 87% for those who spent a fifth of their driving time over the limit.
The study did not just identify the risks arising from speeding, with erratic driving style also a factor in accidents, as well as finding a 30% increase in evening rush hour accidents immediately after the clock went back an hour.
Insure the Box have used the data to draw up a strategy to improve their customer’s driving habits. Targeted communications aimed at their customers has resulted in a 15% fall in speeding, which it hopes will lead to a reduction in the number of serious or fatal accidents. In the event of an accident, the black box’s Accident Alert system can contact and direct the emergency services.
