Nissan has released the first pictures of its new hydrogen fuel-cell concept: the TeRRA.

The TeRRA is a technical showcase which shows that "Nissan is ready to mass-produce fuel cell electric vehicles whenever hydrogen becomes widely available."

Underneath the TeRRA's bonnet, there is no engine as such. A hydrogen fuel-cell fitted beneath the boot floor generates electricity for the TeRRA's electric motors, and Nissan claims that the TeRRA can travel up to 400 miles on a single tank of hydrogen.

The advantages of hydrogen fuel cell technology are manifold. The TeRRA's only emissions are water and, because the TeRRA has no driveshaft, exhaust or differential, it has a flat floor, making it very practical.

The big downside is that the compressed hydrogen on which the TeRRA runs is not commercially available in the UK; however, with the price of fossil fuels continuing to rise, it is likely that we'll see increasing demand for alternative fuel technologies.

Nissan will officially unveil the TeRRA at the Paris Motor Show.
