Electric vehicle pioneers Nissan have revealed the UK has a healthy appetite for all-electric taxi cabs.

The market for all-electric taxis is undergoing rapid growth, especially in Europe, and it was in the UK where Nissan was most successful over the past financial year. Almost half of global all-electric taxi sales over the last financial year have been to European markets, with the Nissan LEAF and e-NV200 models proving particularly popular with UK cab firms looking to move into zero-emissions motoring. The new Nissan LEAF 30kWh, with a single charge range of up to 155 miles, had proven to be a hit with taxi firms.

Nissan supplies taxi fleets across the UK, and when their six largest customers surpassed a collective three million miles of all-electric motoring earlier this year the manufacturer estimated a combined savings on average running costs of £290,000.

Gareth Dunsmore, Head of Electric Vehicles for Nissan Europe said: “Cities across the globe are facing huge challenges in terms of poor air quality and increasing greenhouse emissions. Adding zero emission vehicles such as the Nissan LEAF to taxi services operating in major cities is a vital step to tackling these challenges head on.”
