The CEO of Nissan, Carlos Ghosn has warned that Nissan will reconsider its investment in the UK should it choose to leave the European Union.
Speaking to the BBC at the launch of the new Qashqai at Nissan's Sunderland plant, Ghosn said: "If anything has to change we [would] need to reconsider our strategy and our investments for the future."
Ghosn, however, considers such an exit unlikely.
Asked about the prospect of the UK leaving the EU, Ghosn told the BBC: "Obviously it's going to be a major factor happening and we are going to need to consider what does it mean for us for the future."
Nissan's factory in Sunderland currently produces more than 500,000 cars a year and employs 6,500. Ghosn seems confident in the future of plant, saying: "I'm not worried about Sunderland. Sunderland is a very competitive plant, it's a very productive plant and it's a European plant based in the UK."
Prime Minister David Cameron has promised a vote on Britain's continued membership of the EU in 2017 if the Conservatives win the next general election in 2015.
