Electric vehicle pioneers Nissan are predicting that public electric charging stations will outnumber petrol stations in the UK within the next four years.

The number of petrol stations in the UK has fallen dramatically in recent decades from 37,539 in 1970 to just 8,472, and is on course to fall below 7,870 by August 2020. In contrast, it is predicted that 7,900 charging points will be publically available by the same date, or more if the take up of electric vehicles continues to grow.

The number of charging points has risen to meet demand from the growing number of electric vehicles on UK roads. Go Ultra Low, the joint government and car industry organisation, says that more than 115 electric cars were registered every day in the first quarter of this year, equivalent to one every 13 minutes, and predicts that in little more than a decade electric power could overtake conventional fuels as the top choice for UK motorists. Ninety-eight per cent of UK motorway services already have charging stations for electric vehicles, capable of charging  a Nissan LEAF to 80% capacity in just half-an-hour.
