MINI has reinvented the Clubman as a new four-door concept ahead of its UK launch later this year.
Although officially a concept, the new Clubman looks very much production ready and will go on show at the Geneva Motor Show next week.
Unlike the outgoing Clubman, which features an idiosyncratic three-door arrangement with two front doors and two rear doors, the new model features a more conventional four-door layout. The barn-style rear doors which have been a feature of the Clubman since the 1960s have, however, been retained.
The new Clubman is considerably larger than the existing car -- 26cm longer, 17cm wider and 2.5cm taller -- which is clearly an attempt on MINI's part to broaden the Clubman's appeal by pitching it against the likes of the Golf and Focus. There's more evidence of this in the rear cabin where you'll find three seats instead of the old Clubman's two seat layout.
Although the Clubman concept looks ready for production, there are a number of changes we expect MINI to make before the car reaches dealer forecourts. The wheels, for example, on the concept look enormous -- production cars will undoubtedly feature smaller wheels. The cabin is also expected to be made more conventional before the car goes on sale.
MINI has not released any information on engines but we expect the Clubman to be offered with a similar line-up of powerplants to the new Hatch, with 1.5-litre three-cylinder and 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol and diesel units on offer.
