Mercedes has expanded its A-Class and B-Class ranges with the addition of all-wheel drive models and a brace of 'ECO SE' variants.
The existing A 180 CDI SE and B 180 CDI SE models will be replaced by two new ECO SE models which feature improved fuel consumption and lower emissions with no performance penalty. The A 180 CDI ECO SE emits just 92g/km of CO2 and returns 78.5mpg on the combined cycle, compared to the 74.3mpg of the outgoing model. Similarly the B180 CDI ECO SE model emits 74.3mpg and emits just 98g/km of CO2.
Mercedes has managed these improvements through weight-saving measures, powertrain refinements, a new aerodynamic grille, underbody panelling and lowered suspension. Both cars also feature longer gear ratios, an improved energy recuperation system and a lighter fuel tank.
In addition to these ECO models, the four-wheel drive system first seen on the CLA 250 4MATIC will be added to the A- and B-Class ranges from next January. The system will be available on the A 250 4MATIC and B 220 4MATIC models, offering optimum traction and driving dynamic in all road conditions thanks to an electro-hydraulic multi-disc clutch which distributes torque between the front and rear axles.
Prices for the new A 180 CDI SE start from £21,965, with the B180 CDI ECO SE costing from £22,950. The A250 4MATIC, meanwhile, costs from £28,985 while the B 220 4MATIC is priced at £28,135.
