New technology from Ford could help eliminate speeding by detecting road signs and adjusting the vehicles maximum speed limit accordingly.

The new Intelligent Speed Limiter will debut on the all-new Ford S-MAX, and the system will not only ensure the vehicle abides by the speed limit but also detect pedestrians in the road ahead and apply braking if the driver fails to respond to warnings.

Stefan Kappes, Active Safety Supervisor at Ford of Europe, said: “Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement, Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit.”

Once activated by the driver, the Intelligent Speed Limiter uses a screen-mounted camera to analyse road signs and limit the car’s maximum speed to the appropriate limit. Intelligent Speed Limit is effective between 20-120mph, smoothly applying deceleration by restricting fuel supply to the engine. The system also incorporates existing Ford technology such as Adjustable Speed Limiter and Traffic Sign Recognition, both of which are already a feature of current Ford models.

The new Ford S-MAX will also boast technology including Pre-Collision Assist and Pedestrian Detection, Glare-Free Highbeam headlights and Front Split View Camera. The all-new S-MAX is priced from £24,545, and is on sale now via Ford’s UK main dealer network.
