A new 99bhp 1.0-litre T-GDi power plant has been added to the range-topping Kia Picanto GT-Line and GT-Line S models.

The new engine results in the most powerful Kia Picanto to date, with a 0-60mph time of 9.8 seconds and a top speed of 112mph.

The three-cylinder, turbocharged, direct-injection engine with variable valve timing has a number of technical innovations, including laser-drilled, pyramid-shaped injectors for even fuel distribution into the cylinders, and an electric wastegate motor to optimise the performance from the single-scroll turbocharger and to increase low-end torque.  A one-piece casted manifold reduces exhaust gas temperatures for cleaner emissions, while a dual-theromstat cooling system that allows for the engine block and cylinder heads to be cooled independently reduces engine knocking and increases efficiency.  As a result, the new engine returns a combined 55.4mpg with CO2 emissions of 117g/km.

Picanto GT-Line and GT-Line S models sport larger bumpers, red upper grille highlights, side air intakes, side sills, rear diffuser, twin exhaust tailpipes, 16-inch alloy wheels, Bi-function projection headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED rear lamps, black and red faux leather upholstery, stainless-steel pedals, and satin chrome interior door handles. The arrival of the new engine has been marked by the addition of a 7.0-inch touchscreen display with DAB radio and RDS, and with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, on GT-Line models.  GT-Line S models gain an electric sunroof, heated front seats and steering wheel, automatic air conditioning, smart key with engine start/stop button, cruise control with speed limiter, TomTom satellite navigation, and wireless mobile phone charger as standard.

Prices start at £13,320 for the Kia Picanto GT-Line, with GT-Line S from £14,720, which can be ordered now at Kia retailers. All models benefit from Kia’s 7-year, 100,000-mile warranty.
