It might sound like the stuff of science fiction, but Land Rover claims that its new 'Transparent Bonnet' tech will allow drivers to see through metal.
Well, not quite. The system, which is fitted to the new Discovery Vision concept, uses cameras located in the car's grille to capture footage of the terrain ahead, as well as tracking the position of the front wheels.
The system then sends the image to a large head-up display, effectively allowing the driver to see through the bonnet. This means that the driver can check for any obstacles while also keeping an eye on the position of the front wheels.
While the system has clearly been designed with off-road driving in mind, Land Rover claims the technology will be equally useful in urban conditions such as manoeuvring in the tight confines of a supermarket car park.
Dr Wolfgang Epple, director of R&D at Jaguar Land Rover, said: "We believe the next 25 years will be the most exciting and dynamic the automotive industry has ever experienced. There will be huge strides in environmental innovation, in safety and capability.
"As our vehicles become more capable and autonomous off-road, we will ensure the driver has the confidence to allow the car to continue to progress, over any terrain."
