Lotus have added the option of a new automatic gearbox to its Exige S and Exige S Roadster models.

Priced at an extra £1,667 plus vat, the new automatic transmission brings improvements to both performance and economy. The Exige S is quicker from 0-62mph in automatic guise, down to 3.9 seconds compared to 4 seconds for the manual version, while CO2 emissions fall from 235g/km to 222g/km. The 345bhp, 3.5-litre, supercharged V6 power plant provides a top speed of 162mph.

Fitted with the 6-speed automatic gearbox, the lightweight composite-bodied Exige S lapped Lotus’ Hethel test track facility in the same time as its manual sibling. The automatic selector buttons are mounted in the centre console, with forged aluminium manual-shift paddles located behind the steering wheel. Selecting Sport mode sharpens the Exige’s throttle response and increases the traction slip thresholds via the Lotus Dynamic Performance Management system.

"Expanding the Exige range, with a new automatic gearbox, opens up a new market for those who prefer using a paddle shift with the alternative of an automatic gearshift,” said Group Lotus PLC Chief Executive Jean-Marc Gales.

“We expect that the Exige S Automatic will account for over a third of the total global sales for the Exige S range as many drivers will appreciate the involvement of a manual paddle-shift and the convenience of an automatic."

The Lotus Exige S and Exige S Roadster are available to order with the 6-speed automatic gearbox option now.
