The latest A1 TDI from Audi reduces running costs for owners with impressive efficiency, and a cleaner engine which eliminates spending on both road tax and the London congestion charge.

From this week the company's frugal sub-compact hatchback becomes an even more cost effective proposition for buyers. With fuel economy running at 74.3mpg the A1 TDI now has CO2 emissions which have been reduced to 99g/km, a significant improvement in cleanliness compared to the 105g/km offered by the old A1 1.6 TDI. This means that it is not only exempt from the congestion charge in London, but it is also zero rated for Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) from year 2 onwards, so owners will not have to pay road tax. Fuel consumption, however, remains the same as the older model which also offered 74.3mpg.

The new standard features which help the new cars to reach this impressive level of efficiency are the start-stop engine function and energy recuperation. Other standard features include alloy wheels, air con, ESP with Audi's latest differential lock system, and an audio system with CD player and MP3 compatibility and a 6.5 inch retractable display.

Despite the improved emissions, the performance offered by the turbo charged, direct injection common rail unit remains strong. The A1 1.6 TDI, which comes with a 5-speed manual gear box, is able to accelerate from 0-62mph in 10.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 118mph.

The new 99g/km output engine can be ordered in all three trim levels currently available for the A1 - SE, Sport, and S line, with the prices remaining the same for all three, meaning the a new A1 costs from £14,480 to £17,864 OTR.

The A1 is not the only Audi car which boasts impressive efficiency and cleanliness either, as the company has been working hard to improve these factors across its range for some time. The most obvious example of this is the 3-door A3 1.6 TDI, which matches the 99g/km and 74.3mpg capability of the A1.
