Cars registered from 1 April next year will see changes to the way their road tax is calculated, the DVLA has announced.

Under the new calculations, the amount you pay the first time you tax your vehicle will be based on the amount of CO2 emissions, but thereafter it will be based dependent on the type of vehicle, with normal petrol and diesel powered cars to cost £140 per year, alternative fuel vehicles £130 per year, and zero emissions vehicles exempt from tax.

For vehicles with a list price of over £40,000, the taxation system will change even further. In addition to the above, and extra rate of £310 per year will be due on top for five years before reverting back to the standard rate system.

Vehicles registered before 1 April 2017 will not be affected by the changes. You can check the tax rate for your vehicle by visiting https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables.
