Mitsubishi have unveiled their Concept Global Small vehicle in Geneva today.
Also known as the e-compact, the Japanese manufacturer has also announced that a production-ready model of the vehicle will be unveiled later in the year, with a view to beginning production early in 2012 at Mitsubishi's new plant in Thailand.
Mitsubishi exports 80% of its products, and with an eye on globalisation it hopes to exploit emerging markets with the production version of the e-concept, while using its size and efficiency to make it attractive to existing markets such as Europe. Despite its small dimensions, Mitsubishi claim the e-concept should accommodate 5 adults and their luggage, and that its 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engines should offer competitive fuel consumption and emissions. The production model is planned to have auto start/stop, regenerative braking, and low rolling resistance tyres. The manufacturer has further hinted at a fully electric model to follow, stating that the e-compact has been engineered to accommodate an electric power train.
Mitsubishi have not revealed further specifications or pricing details for the production model - or a confirmed UK launch - with this information to be confirmed at a later date.
