The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has claimed the title of UK’s best-selling plug-in electrified vehicle.

A total of 476 were sold in April, bringing the UK year-to-date sales total to 2,695.

Launched in 2014, the Outlander PHEV hit showrooms just as the UK plug-in hybrid market was about to mushroom, with more than 36,800 examples currently on the road.

The Outlander PHEV’s popularity has helped Mitsubishi buck the trend of a declining UK new car market to record a 12.1% growth in the first four months of the year. Buyers have been attracted by the Outlander PHEV’s low running costs, company car tax of just 13%, and exemption from the London congestion charge. Rare among electric vehicles, it can operate 4WD using only electric power, thanks to the twin electric-motor system and Mitsubishi’s Super-All Wheel Control system.

Priced from £32,305 on-the-road, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is capable of 166.1 MPG, an electric range of up to 33 miles, and can be rapid-charged in 25 minutes or fully charged from a domestic home charge point in just 3.5 hours.
