Mazda marked a major milestone this month as the 50-millionth vehicle rolled off its Hofu production line in Japan’s Yamaguchi prefecture.
The company began producing vehicles in October 1931, when the first Mazda three-wheeled truck was built in Hiroshima. Mazda entered the passenger car market in 1960 with the R360 Coupe. It opened a second domestic plant in Hofu in 1982.
Masamichi Kogai,Mazda, CEO and President, said: “Mazda began making cars 86 years ago, and now we’ve reached 50 million units of production in Japan. Even making 1 million cars a year, it would take 50 years to reach this milestone, showing just how long Mazda’s history is”.
Mazda has an ambitious plan to sell 1,660,000 cars this financial year, as part of a strategy to grow the brand and establish a global production framework capable of manufacturing two million units annually by 2024.
