It's official! Mazda and Alfa Romeo's owners, Fiat, have signed an agreement, confirming that the two manufacturers will collaborate on a new two-seater roadster.

A partnership between the two firms has been on the cards for some time, but today's news finally confirms that the Mazdalfa -- or, if you prefer, the Alfzda -- will go into production.

Both manufacturers are set to design their own car, with both models being based on the next-generation MX-5 platform. The cars are predicted to enter production in 2015 and will be built at Mazda's Hiroshima factory.

Alfa Romeo has yet to confirm what its new car will be called, but a return to the Spider name seems likely. The Mazda will, of course, be badged as the new MX-5.

One of the key ingredients which will not be shared by the new cars is the engine. No details have been released on the cars' engines, but expect both to be sub-2.0-litre turbocharged units.

So, if you happen to be in the market for a small two-seater roadster in 2015, which one would you choose?
