Mazda and Alfa Romeo's parent company, Fiat, have agreed to co-develop and manufacture a new two-seater sports car based on the next-generation MX-5.
The companies will develop two different roadsters around the same architecture with different styling and different engines.
The new Mazda will, of course, be the next MX-5 but there is little information on what the Alfa Romeo is likely to be called, or what it will look like. Alfa's 2010 2uettottanta concept (pictured above) may give a slight hint as to the styling direction Alfa is likely to take with the car and, if it ends up looking anything like the pictures, it'll be a tempting proposition.
In theory the Mazda/Fiat collaboration is a great idea. The MX-5 is a great car but lacks sex appeal, and that's something that Alfa Romeo has by the bucket-load. However, Alfa don't have the best track record when it comes to working with Japanese marques -- the Alfa Romeo/Nissan partnership of the 1980s spawned the awful ARNA, a car which highlighted each manufacturer's shortcomings (basically, Nissan did the styling and Alfa did the technical stuff).
However, if they get it right this time around, we think Alfa and Mazda could have a winner on their hands. Both cars will be produced in Hiroshima, Japan and the Alfa is expected to go into production in 2015.
