A landmark day for London taxi drivers took place this week as the very first electric TX taxi was handed over to its new owner.
Cabbie David Harris from Chingford in North East London was one of the first drivers to put down a deposit on a new TX when the London EV Company opened the order books for the new model last summer.
A BMW i8 it is not, but It was love at first sight for the former professional tennis player turned cabbie as he settled into his new workplace, which comes with class-leading wheelchair accessibility, on-board wifi, phone and laptop charging points, wide-opening rear hinged doors, contactless card machines, and panoramic roof. The revolutionary LEVC TX offers zero emissions motoring thanks to its advanced battery electric powertrain, with a small back-up petrol generator giving a total range of up to 400 miles including 80 miles pure electric driving. Mr Harris expects to save £500-£600 a month in fuel savings, servicing, and overall running costs by switching over from his current diesel cab.
“I’m absolutely delighted to get the keys to my new TX electric taxi and there are two reasons I bought the cab”, he explained. “First, I can't wait to see the response from passengers, I know that they're going to love it. And second, I'm going to see some a significant savings on running the electric taxi. Even though I can't charge the vehicle at home, I should be able to charge the cab once a day at Heathrow. Combined with lower servicing and overall running costs, this means I should end up £500-£600 a month better off before I even go out to work."
The TX’s multi-filter system removes gases and particles from the incoming air, while an in-built air quality sensor automatically closes the external air intake if it detects increased levels of pollution in the outside air, protecting both driver and passengers from London’s often poor-quality air. It also boasts a package of both active and passive safety systems, including forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, and emergency brake assistance. Chinese owners Geely have ploughed over £300m into LEVC, and plan to follow up on the launch of the TX with an electric LCV.
