Lister Cars, one of the most evocative names in the history of British sports car manufacturing, is staging a comeback after a twenty-five year absence.
More than a quarter of a century has passed since the last Lister rolled off the production line; however, the company has announced that it will return to build a near-exact replica of its most famous of creations -- the 1958 Lister 'Knobbly' Jaguar, which was raced by the likes of Sir Stirling Moss (pictured below).
The new cars will be built at a new state-of-the-art facility in Cambridge, the town in which the company was founded in 1954. Company founder Brian Lister's original works drawings and manufacturing jigs have all been re-commissioned for the project and many of the team involved in the original 1950s car have been invited back into service.
The car will also use Jaguar D-Type-spec engines and gearboxes, as per the original car's specification, which will be supplied by Crosthwaite and Gardener.
Prior to the announcement of the brand's return, Lister actually consisted of three individual companies (George Lister Engineering of Cambridge, Brian Lister Light Engineering and Lister Storm). These companies have been consolidated into one company called Lister Motor Company Limited following an investment by used car warranty providers Warrantywise.
Lawrence Whittaker, CEO of Warranty Wise, said: "Anyone with a fondness for British sports car manufacturing and with an understanding of Lister's remarkable heritage should rightly be excited by this news.
"The Lister 'Knobbly' was a powerful, giant-killing racing car in its heyday, and with all the expertise we have brought together for this project, I can promise that the new Lister will be a fabulously exciting and desirable car."
