Production of the iconic Land Rover Defender is set to come to an end in a little over two years, some 67 years after it was first launched.
The last of the off-roaders will roll off the production line in December 2015.
Since the original Land Rover Series was unveiled back in 1948, it is estimated that over two million models have been bought. The vehicles have proved faithful servants to many, including farmers and safari tour guides, for decades. Even the Queen has been seen behind the wheel of a Defender.
In recent years however the car has fallen victim to stricter environmental and emissions laws across the world – all new Defenders emit more than 255g/km of CO2 and fall under the highest road tax band M.
Jaguar Land Rover’s Indian owners, Tata, have yet to make a decision on any successor to the model, but significant changes will have to be made to any vehicle which does replace it.
A prototype, touted as the car to succeed the Defender, was unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show, but no decision on whether it will enter production is expected in the near future.
