The Kia Niro concept has been unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Kia claims that the new Niro "hints at a possible future B-segment contender." The Niro is designed to rival the likes of the Nissan Juke; however, there is no word yet on whether Kia intends to put the car into production.
Underneath, the Niro uses a 158bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine coupled to a seven-speed double-clutch gearbox to drive the front wheels and a 44bhp electric motor to power the rear wheels, making it a petrol hybrid. The hybrid system is recharged from regenerative braking and is only used when road condition require extra grip.
The Niro was designed in Europe at Kia's Frankfurt Design Studio and Kia claims that it had European tastes in mind when it was creating the car. Gregory Guillaume, Chief Design at Kia's Frankfurt office, said: "Ten years ago people wanted understated style in the SUV market, but increasingly as more people migrate to the B-segment they are looking for strong character and individuality.
"We believe Niro is cheekier and even sleeker to show a clear spirited and intrepid character -- a car that has the tenacity to deal with any challenge that comes its way," he added.
Kia will use the Frankfurt Motor Show to assess the public's response to the Niro.
