With temperatures soaring this week a leading road safety organisation has issued advice to help drivers keep their cool behind the wheel.
To combat the near 30 degree temperatures, GEM Motoring Assist is calling on drivers to take extra care in planning long journeys, building in rest breaks and allowing extra time for traffic queues swelled by holidaymakers. Where possible, they advise setting off earlier of later to avoid driving during the hottest times of day. Choosing clothing that helps keeps you cool is a good idea, but beware the dangers of driving barefoot, in flip-flops, or loose sandals. Keeping a large bottle of water in the car to drink from during rest stops will help keep you hydrated.
It’s not just drivers who will feel the heat – never leave children or animals unattended in hot cars, and if you see a child or animal in distress please alert the emergency services.
Just as important is to bear in mind the effects of the heat on the vehicle itself. Before setting off, check the engine coolant, screenwash, and oil levels, and the tyre pressures and tread depth.
“Driving in hot weather can be challenging”, said GEM Motoring Assist road safety officer Neil Worth, “but we can reduce stress and discomfort by following some simple tips to ensure that we, our passengers and our vehicles are ready for the heat.”
