Jaguar Land Rover have unveiled the latest powertrain technology to emerge from their new £1billion Engine Manufacturing Centre.
At the forefront is a new four-cylinder petrol engine - the latest addition to Jaguar Land Rover’s Ingenium line-up -which will be up to 25% more powerful and 15% more fuel efficient than the previous generation of engines. The Ingenium range boasts cutting-edge technology such as electrohydraulic valvetrain, integrated exhaust manifold, and a twin scroll turbocharger with ceramic ball bearings, while common architecture makes the engines flexible enough to be fitted across Jaguar Land Rover’s product line-up from sports saloons to luxury SUVs. Ingenium diesels were launched in 2015, and now the petrol version has entered production ready for the 2017 model year.
Another development announced by Jaguar Land Rover is an advanced new automatic transmission, whose ultra-wide 20:1 ratio spread results in fuel economy improvements of up to 10% by integrating a low-range gear box, dual-clutch, and hybrid technology. The new gearbox saves around 20kg in weight, and has emerged from the part-Government funded TRANSCEND programme which aims to boost UK transmission production.
Jaguar Land Rover is planning further improvements, and engineers are currently working towards the target of reducing CO2 emissions from the firm’s vehicles by a quarter within the next five years, while the recent announcement of a Jaguar entry into the FIA Formula E Championship points towards future electric-powered models.
