One of the main objectives of a supercar -- apart from being fast, obviously -- is to turn heads.
Drive a Lamborghini Murcielago down the street and you're going to get noticed. Perhaps not for the right reasons, but you'll get noticed all the same.
And this brings us on to the main problem with the McLaren MP4-12C. Don't get us wrong: we think the McLaren may well be the greatest car ever made; however, it just doesn't look particularly special parked up next to a Lambo or a Ferrari.
That's where the German tuning company Hamann Motorsport comes in. They've taken a standard McLaren MP4-12C and turned it into a work of art inspired by the legendary BMW art cars.
Besides the retina-incinerating paint job, Hamann have fitted the 12C with a bespoke bodykit, including new front and rear bumpers, side skirts, a diffuser, triple exhaust pipes and a rooftop air scoop. Oh yes, and 21-inch competition-style alloy wheels.
The Germans don't have a good track record when it comes to 'wacky' paint jobs.
The Hamann 12C is representative of a typically Teutonic brand of automotive schizophrenia. 98 per cent of the time, the Germans produce cars which, while technically brilliant, are soul-crushingly boring. The new Golf is a perfect example of this.
However, when the Germans get creative, they go completely and utterly bonkers. Remember the Polo Harlequin? A superbly engineered and meticulously built car ruined by a bout of German 'wackiness'.
However, we don't think that Hamann have ruined the 12C at all. In fact, we think it looks absolutely fantastic. The company has managed to inject the McLaren with a little character and, for this reason alone, we think their efforts should be commended.
