The Government has announced a £10 million pound investment programme in the UK’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
The announcement comes as the number of electric vehicle sold in the UK so far this year surpassed the total for the whole of 2015, and is part of a greater £35 million commitment to the ultra low emissions vehicle sector. £7.5 million has been earmarked for workplace chargepoints, with a further £2.5 million to go towards on-street charging infrastructure.
The number of ultra low emission vehicles on our roads are at record levels and we are committing £35 million to help install new chargepoints and offer new grants as we aim for nearly all cars and vans on our roads to be zero emission by 2050”, said Transport Minister John Hayes.
So far this year 28,697 electric cars have been bought in the UK, attracted in part by the Plug-In Car Grant savings. September saw record sales of 6,113, up by more than 50 per cent on the same month last year. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is by far the most popular plug-in hybrid, accounting for more than a quarter of the market.
