Ford has announced a project designed to help cities meet cleaner air target by trialling fleets of Ford Transit plug-in hybrid van in London starting this autumn.
Transport for London, Metropolitan Police, Clancy Plant, Addison Lee, and British Gas are the first confirmed fleet operators for the year-long trial of 20 new plug-in Transits, which will run solely on electric power for most inner-city but will have the benefit of range extenders for longer journeys. A telematics system will collect data to establish how well the plug-in Transit meets the needs of its fleet users. Ford hopes the multi-million pound project will pave the way for the plug-in Transit to be released on general sale sometime in 2019.
Project director Mark Harvey said: “Commercial vehicle (CV) use is incredibly varied from sector to sector, and the trial should give us some really interesting insight into how CVs are used across a range of industries in the city, allowing us, as a manufacturer, to better develop electrified CVs that work for the customers, whilst also improving air quality.
