Did you know that if you sneeze while driving at 60mph, you’re driving blind for 20 metres? And with an increasing number of us suffering from allergies, this is a growing problem.

Well, to combat the obvious safety risks associated with sneezing at the wheel, Ford has introduced a new air filtration system on its new Mondeo which blocks up to 99 per cent of pollen, as well as almost all nitrogen dioxide – one of the key triggers of asthma.

“Fresh air may not be as immediately apparent to drivers as how a car looks, or how it drives, but it is an important part of the quality experience delivered by Ford cars that will be equipped with the new filter,” said Volker Scheer from Ford. “The new filter is 50 per cent more effective than its predecessor at blocking ultra-fine particles that are less than one thousandth of the width of a human hair.”

The system was developed by Ford’s European Research Centre in Aachen, Germany, and is made from activated charcoal, as are gas masks, respirators and spacesuits. An air quality sensor detects carbon monoxide and nitrogen levels outside the car and shuts down the incoming air, switching on the advanced air circulation and filtration system in the process.

The all-new Mondeo goes on sale in Europe later this year.
