UK manufacturing has received a massive boost after Ford announced a £181 million investment in its Bridgend Engine Plant.
From late 2018 the South Wales facility will produce a family of all-new, advanced fuel-efficient petrol engines.
The move is being backed by the Welsh Government to the tune of £14.67 million, with Welsh Economy Minister Edwina Hart commenting, “Ford is a Welsh Anchor Company and the Bridgend Engine Plant plays a key role in the economy of South Wales. Ford’s decision to manufacture its new innovative engine here in Wales is a tribute to the reputation of the local management team and the quality and loyalty of the Welsh workforce and will safeguard more than 750 skilled Welsh jobs for many years.”
The Bridgend factory opened in 1980, and currently churns out an impressive 3,400 engines per day, mostly for the Fiesta, B-MAX, Focus, C-MAX, Kuga, and Mondeo models. The latest announcement will see the site assume responsibility for producing a family of all-new engines which have been developed by teams of engineers working at Ford Technical, Research and Innovation Centres both in the UK and Germany.
