The special edition Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S has announced its arrival by claiming a spectacular record.
In the hands of racing driver Benny Leuchtar, the new Golf GTI Clubsport S broke the lap record for production front wheel drive cars at the legendary Nurburgring Nordschleife with a time of 7m 49.21s. The track-focused Golf GTI Clubsport S boasts dynamic chassis control enabling the handling to be configured to suit the conditions at the Nurburgring the driving profile selector. The lightweight two-seat design and 306bhp engine proved to be a winning combination, as did the 19-inch Pretoria semi-slick tyres. The record-breaking lap offered an audio as well as visual treat, with the enlarged exhaust tailpipe cross section providing a strong backfire under braking.
Just 400 examples of the track-developed Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S will be produced, with the record-breaking example bearing the number 001/400. The model has been developed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first Golf GTI, and will make its public bow at the Lake Worthersee GTI event in Germany which starts today.
