Next Green Car’s Zap-Map, the UK’s most comprehensive map of EV charging points, has shown an increase in EV charging points from 700 to over 2,000.

The news will be welcomed by owners of electric models or those who are considering purchasing the energy efficient vehicle.

Since its launch in May 2011, Next Green Car's Zap-Map has seen a rapid roll out of more than 2,000 charging points across 888 locations.

Current EV charging points have developed in both quality and quantity. While most of the charging points were 'slow' when the service was launched - with chargers using a standard 13 Amp supply (6-8 hours for a full charge); the majority of the new points being installed are 'fast' chargers, using a 32 Amp supply (3-4 hours for a full charge).

Aside from the current 1,600 slow charging points, over 400 'fast' chargers have now been installed. This is in addition to 35 'rapid' chargers, which provide direct current and an 80% charge in 30 minutes.

Brits search for low runners

Dr Ben Lane, Managing Editor of Next Green Car, is optimistic about the outlook for the business:

"With the advent of the Plug-in Van Grant, and the imminent launch of several new EVs and two innovative Plug-in electric cars, a robust and extensive charging point infrastructure is more important than ever and we are delighted that the charging points on Zap-Map have passes the 2,000 milestone."

Dr Lane's comments are in line with the latest findings from AA, which concluded that the idea of cheap-to-run cars has high appeal.

"'Low running costs' (39%) is second only to 'present car too old' (45%) as the main considerations for changing a car, which augurs well for emerging car technologies," highlighted Mark Huggins, director of AA Financial Services.

New car technology is still being treated with caution, according to Higgins, "but a new question in the study showed that nearly a third (31%) say they are attracted to the concept of hybrid or electric cars, provided the cost falls and technology improves."
